The UMERC is the research arm of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Malaya. It will carry out research in areas of clinical ophthalmology, basic and applied science in ophthalmology and in the epidemiology of eye diseases. The Department of Ophthalmology has 15 members of academic staff that carry out clinical work, research and teaching in all aspects of ophthalmology. The department has more than 40 postgraduate clinical master’s students and is active in research and teaching.
University of Malaya Eye Research Centre (UMERC) was first conceived to fulfil the need for a strong research support facility in the field of ophthalmology in the University of Malaya, as well as in Malaysia. Spearheaded by its first director, Associate Professor Dr Kenneth Fong Choong Sian, UMERC was officially launched as a research arm of the Department of Ophthalmology by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Malaysia, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah on 27th July 2009.

of Malaya Medical Centre via the research output of the Eye Research Centre
> To become a clinical trials centre for new ophthalmic drugs
> To ensure all research projects conducted in the Ophthalmology Department lead to publication in ISI journals
> To innovate new and cost-effective ways of treating common eye diseases in Malaysia
> To develop and maintain the quality of academic staff in the UMERC
> To collaborate with international centres of excellence in eye research
