Phacoemulsification is the gold standard for cataract surgery and has progressed tremendously over the past few decades. Mastering it is one of the most important skills in Ophthalmology and must be instilled in every practicing resident in Ophthalmology.
The Ophthalmology Department, University of Malaya (UM), and University of Malaya Eye Research Centre (UMERC) organized its second Phacoemulsification Workshop, a quintessential session on cataract surgery techniques, phaco-dynamics, and techniques to undertake during challenging cataract surgery. It was a collaborative effort that included UM, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). It was well supported by other industry partners, particularly those involved in providing phacoemulsification machines, intraocular lenses, and related items.
The workshop, officiated by the Head of Department of Ophthalmology, Associate Professor Dr Norlina Binti Ramli, and lead by Dr Penny Lott as the organising chairperson was on 17-18th February 2022 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. It was a huge success, with a full capacity of 18 trainees from all the universities. It was a forum showcasing the machines and equipment and unveiled the techniques involved in cataract surgery by top national faculty who shared their valuable experiences.
The organising committee lead by Dr Penny Lott made sure the knowledge was abundantly shared by Associate Professor Dr Khairidzan Mohd Kamal from IIUA, and other faculty members. Techniques for management of hard cataracts and intraocular lens implantation were illustrated along with hands-on practice using the Kitaro sets. The in-house lecturers from the Ophthalmology Department were present to give their insight in their respective areas of expertise, thereby enriching the overall experience.
In a nutshell, the Phacoemulsification Workshop 2022 was a success, especially in training the budding young surgeons of Ophthalmology, making it a very memorable experience.
