Of Banana Leaves and the Escape Room

Ah, the Basic Science Course has finally dawned upon the First Year Ophthalmology Trainees. As dry as kuih bangkit it may be, we appreciate the guidance of our Lecturers in explaining the importance of these facts. They are basic for a reason for it is a foundation and the basis of ocular diseases.

Luckily for us, 15th of August blessed us with an early mark which interprets into a much-needed bonding session with our fellow colleagues including those serving East Malaysia.

Unfortunately for us, indecisiveness in choosing a place to eat is deeply ingrained in our Malaysian hearts.

Somewhere close to the Hospital?

A place that offers free refills?

Vegetarian-friendly?

Financially merciful?

You’ve guessed it - it’s the BananaBro at MidValley!

We downed pots and pots of condiments and jugs of Teh Ais (yours truly unfortunately does not indulge in the consumption of the black liquid of sustenance a.k.a. coffee).

And we’ve also discovered that there’s a proper way of folding the banana leaves once you’re done. Pretty neat! Convenient, sustainable, and nature friendly. It’s not too late for us to become environmentalists.

Did we stop there? Absolutely not.

All of us young-at-heart embarked on an adventure, so off we went to Breakout. And by that we meant the Escape Room, and definitely not another bout of acne vulgaris.

There were heaps of theme rooms at hand but unfortunately we got thrown into one of the most difficult scenarios - the one with a success rate of 20%.

It was all fun and games until one of us unleashed an unexpected scream of terror (because a trap door opened without our consent - definitely not our fault).

“I thought this theme room was family friendly!”

And with that, it quickly turned into a horror-esque escape room, much to our dismay. Which may actually whipped us into completing the game. on. time.

That’s it! We’re one of the 20%! Oh if only that would equate to us passing our Part 1 exam.

Happy tummy, happy day, but no thanks to the screamers for the perpetual palpitations.

Signing off!

P/S: Fold the banana leaves towards you. You’re welcome.
