On the 9th of August 2024, the Department of Ophthalmology conducted the annual cornea sclera procurement workshop. Our in-house Cornea Consultant, Prof Sujaya, and her cornea fellows, Dr Najieha and Dr Lim Yi Wen, led the teaching.
This session was attended by nine of our final-year trainees as this surgical skill is considered an essential part of Ophthalmology postgraduate training. The demonstration was followed by a hands-on session where each trainee could practice their surgical ability on a cadaveric goat's eye. Emphasis was made on ensuring adequate cornea button diameter, avoiding wrinkling of the cornea surface and adequate removal of uveal tissue.
Having this small group learning opportunity prior to completing specialist training is greatly beneficial to the trainees when they become independent Ophthalmologists in the near future. In fact, in the following week our department was blessed with a organ transplant donor and the trainees were able to apply their skills to procure two healthy corneas.
