On 18th July 2025, the Department of Ophthalmology, Universiti Malaya had the honor of hosting Prof. Mandeep S. Singh, an internationally renowned expert in ophthalmology and genetic medicine. Prof. Mandeep currently holds appointments as a Professor of Ophthalmology and Associate Professor of Genetic Medicine at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
The talk conducted in a hybrid format was entitled “What to Tell Your Patients with Inherited Retinal Disease (IRD)”. Over 50 clinicians attended in person at Pudina Hall of Universiti Malaya Medical Center, with an additional 20 participants joining virtually.
Prof. Mandeep delivered a compelling and insightful presentation, combining clinical acumen with the latest advancements in IRD research. He also addressed the evolving landscape of genetic ophthalmology, emphasizing that while many IRDs currently lack definitive treatment, clinicians must not underestimate the importance of empathetic patient engagement.
He underscored the need to move beyond the discouraging notion of "there is nothing more we can do." Instead, clinicians are urged to support patients with IRD through their often arduous diagnostic journey—commonly referred to as a diagnostic odyssey—by providing clarity, a definitive diagnosis, honest yet compassionate prognostication, and guidance for future care. Above all, patients must be given the opportunity to feel heard and understood.
The Department extends its deepest gratitude to Prof. Mandeep for his thought-provoking talk and to all attendees for their enthusiastic participation in this enriching academic exchange.
