Established in 2009, UM Eye Research Centre (UMERC) is the research arm of the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya. It was founded by the then Head of Research, following a need of a robust research wing to facilitate the growth of tehcnological advancement locally, as well as nationally.
UMERC supports research in the areas of clinical ophthalmology, basic and applied science in ophthalmology, and epidemiology of eye diseases.
To be a world renowned Centre of Excellence for Ophthalmological Research and Education.
To provide research and educational support for Ophthalmology-related activities at the Universiti Malaya.
- To conduct and support research in ophthalmology, including collaborations between clinical and basic science researchers.
- To become a clinical trials centre for new ophthalmic drugs/ procedures.
- To develop facilities in basic science research in ophthalmology. UMERC now has its own tissue culture facilities and can support genomic and proteomic research.
- To organise and conduct scientific meetings and seminars, provide talks and events to disseminate new knowledge among staff, and create public awareness on various eye diseases.
- To encourage publication of research projects conducted by the Dept of Ophthalmology in ISI/ SCOPUS journals.
- To improve the quality of care provided to ophthalmology patients at UMMC, via clinical work and teaching services.
- To develop and maintain the quality of academic staff in the UMERC.
- To collaborate with international centres of excellence in eye research. Currently, UMERC has partnerships with centres such as the Singapore Eye Research Institute, the Lions Eye Institute, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and the University of Liverpool.
