The Ophthalmology Team participated in a community health outreach programme at Balai Raya Kampung Orang Asli Bari, Johol, Negeri Sembilan, on 26 September 2026, alongside teams from other departments and medical students. Organised in collaboration with HOPE, the programme provided eye screening services alongside dental and breast health screenings for the local community.

The team conducted comprehensive eye assessments, including visual acuity testing, autorefractor screening, intraocular pressure measurement and fundus examination using a portable fundus camera and direct ophthalmoscope. Most participants had healthy fundus findings (86.2%) and normal eye pressure (98.28%). Key findings requiring referral included active diabetic retinopathy (3.45%), vision-affecting cataracts (3.45%), possible glaucoma in a child (1.72%), and alternating intermittent exotropia with bilateral cataracts (1.72%). Mild myopia was also detected in four of the 22 children screened.

Participants requiring further evaluation were counselled and provided with referral letters to nearby hospitals or optometry practices for follow-up care. The programme highlighted the importance of accessible community eye screening in identifying potential eye conditions early, raising awareness of eye health and facilitating timely referrals for appropriate treatment.
